And now LJ is not sending me notification emails. :P

Relinking from [livejournal.com profile] jessicala -- This is reportedly the Russian blogger that the DDOSs LJ's been experiencing lately are intended to shut up. Scary stuff.

what the ... okay. Maybe someone else can help me figure this out.

On my journal page, I have a custom tweak that shows my tags in a nested style, which is why I have weird tags with dots and stuff.

My 2008 school tags are "personal.school.2008.fall" and "personal.school.2008.spring" and "personal.school.2008.winter". They look like

personal
-school
--2008
---fall
---spring
---winter

(with spaces instead of the dashes.)

So for 2010, when I have 2010.fall, 2010.spring, 2010.spring.vfd, 2010.summer, and 2010.winter, why is it that .fall just doesn't show up? I had 8 entries tagged personal.school.2010.fall, but that tag just won't show up in the list. Spring, spring.vfd, summer and winter all do, but not fall. I changed that tag to "personal.school.2010.autumn" and then autumn shows up in the tag list - but if I change it back to "fall", nothing.

I'm not out of tag options - LJ can handle up to 2000 tags per journal, and I have only just over 300. I don't get it - anyone have any ideas?

PSA:
If you have your Facebook linked to your LJ profile via Facebook Connect, your legal name (or at least, whatever name you gave Facebook, which their TOS says has to be your legal name) is listed in your LJ profile. This is apparently not something that is advertised when you use Facebook Connect.

Taking a cue from several other people, I will specify that by and large, Facebook and LJ serve two totally different purposes for me, and for the most part have two totally different audiences - therefore, if I want anything cross-posted between one and the other, I will do it myself, and I very adamantly do not want anyone else making that decision for me.

In my journal, please do not tick the tickybox that crossposts things to Facebook. If you leave a comment here that you REALLY REALLY want posted on FB too, copy and paste it.

Also, LJ's current database fuckery is all my fault. Every time my paid account comes due (it expires on Monday this time around), databases or servers or something gets so screwed up that the site is unworkable.

Obviously, the solution is for LJ to give me a free permanent account for my ten-year LJ-versary which is coming up next month. Right? Right?

For another 25 minutes, each comment on this post will be a dollar donated to a Christmas celebration for Seattle's homeless youth, including food and gifts of warm clothes and other necessities.

Edit: Time's up. Final count at noon was 577 comments, plus another person agreed to match the first hundred at a dollar each, so $677 raised to provide necessities for the homeless youth of Seattle. Pretty impressive, given the normal attitude of the [livejournal.com profile] seattle community.

Happy holidays to all, whatever your holiday of choice may be!

PS. Does anyone happen to know if there's a trick to reheating shrimp in the microwave without overcooking it, beyond "check it every ten seconds"? I have leftover shrimp scampi from tonight's Red Lobster dinner :)

(... why is my lobster userpic not showing up?)
ginger: (dear journal....)
Randomness.

1. I am seriously cuted out that the winter holiday header for the main LJ page includes a decorated moose. :)

2. Math final is done, I'm pretty confident in my success, the instructor says that grades are due Friday and should be posted on the school website on Monday. We'll see.

3. Today was the last day I fill in my age on a form as 28. Rawr.

Pet peeve of the day:

"Mods, I tried to put this behind a cut, but the HTML didn't work."

For the love of god. It's nine goddamn characters, the RTF web-posting option has a clickybutton to automagically add a cut, and there's a freakin' FAQ on how to LJ-cut that is linked from the info pages of most communities that require it. Also? HTML doesn't just "not work." Stop trying to come up with excuses that really all just translate into "I was too lazy to put in an LJ cut, so fuck all y'all."

(Note: Personal journals are an entirely different story, and I don't care whether people use them or not, so long as I'm not getting plastered with porn on my f'list. This pet peeve is purely focused at people who do this in communities.)

Hey [livejournal.com profile] kitiara!

Scroll about halfway down.

I don't think I'll need to be any more specific than that.

Yoinked from elsewhere: Introduce yourself!

I'm Ginger, age 28, live with my husband and two cats not too far from Seattle. I knit voraciously, read like a gerbil on crack (this is me), watch movies of all varieties except modern comedy, and play WoW (Alliance, Feathermoon US). I also volunteer on the advisory board of a girls' leadership and service organization. I'm a Sagittarius, a medical coder/biller, a redhead, proper chaotic neutral, and a bit of a prude. My pet peeves include rudeness, people who talk during movies (but singing with musicals is okay), poop jokes, and Masonic conspiracy theories.

This is my 6500th LJ post. And my LJ will be ten nine years old in May.

Wow.
ginger: (dear journal....)
LJ layout question.

I have my normal style, which is fairly basic but not bare bones, for when I'm reading LJ on a computer at home or work.

I also have a separate bare-bones, no-userpics, text-only style that I use when I'm reading LJ on my mobile device (seen here).

And finally, on my Viewing Options page, I have the little checkbox for "View comment pages in your own journal style" checked.

However, when I'm looking at LJ on my mobile, that checkbox doesn't seem to apply - probably because I have to add the style number for that view, rather than it being the default. And there are a couple of super-fancy customized layouts among you fine folks whereby trying to load *your* layouts causes my mobile's browser (on both my new phone and my old one) to crash. (Which isn't that big a deal, I know who's pages do it and for now I just don't go there, because your LJ layouts are for you and not for me and all that jazz.) But ... is there a way to edit the mobile-view style to force-add a ?style=mine onto comment links?

Hat tip to [livejournal.com profile] new_iconoclast (who, unlike me, knows how to use a slide rule): Leave a comment and I will pick three of your interests and three of your icons I would like you to explain. Post them in your journal and allow others to comment and request the same.

I mememe'd at Ike, who pointed out that it wasn't terribly fair as I only have eight interests listed :) But he managed.

Interests:
2-17-05: The day of a "historic" flame war in [livejournal.com profile] hip_domestics that is actually a good chunk of what led to me being one of the community mods. This interest is mostly included as a joke, and is currently only shared by one other person and a snark community that also came out of the same flame war.

mustard: The above-mentioned flame war came about because one person requested recipes that included mustard. About two hours later, someone else (and it's still unsure whether they were trolling or not) requested any recipe that did not include mustard. Several people said "Um....seriously? Get a damn cookbook, or even, gasp, leave out the mustard" and it was on. Yes, the whole thing was pretty dumb. That's why the whole "mustard" thing turned into a huge joke. For the first year I knew [livejournal.com profile] clockworktomato, every package I sent her included a jar or bottle of a new kind of flavored mustard.

walking: Walking got added to the list at the beginning of 2006, when I started doing so regularly and then started training for the 3-Day. It's still my favorite form of exercise and the only one that doesn't feel like work to me.

Icons:

Glomps for Everyone: [livejournal.com profile] elsrik pulled this one out for me. It's from a Sinfest comic, and he pointed it out to me because every time [livejournal.com profile] clockworktomato or I log on, we *glomp* at each other. I'm not actually sure where the *glomp* thing came from, but a glomp is one of those big tackle-y hugs like you give your best friend when you haven't seen them in a while.

crickets: [livejournal.com profile] elsrik made this one too :) There was a craigslist ad...I don't think I bookmarked it, and I don't know that CL would have it on their site anymore, it was a good long time ago... No! Here it is! The end line - "If found, contact me unless you are angry and covered in crickets" - cracked me up, and it was something that I could picture G'kar, my favorite Babylon 5 character, saying with a very deadpan look on his face. Hence the combination of G'kar and "unless you are angry and covered in crickets". :)

dig this/cleolinda: [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda does a series of what she calls "Movies in Fifteen Minutes">. They're hysterical, very short scriptlike parodies (can be found at [livejournal.com profile] m15m, check out the memories/tags). This one happens to be from the "Phantom of the Opera in Fifteen Minutes", pointing out that Christine seems to be getting way more into the final performance than her fiance and the managers of the opera company want her to. It was a tossup between that one and one with the same picture reading "Collapsible bodice!" but I thought that "I kinda dig this" was a little more universally usable :)
ginger: (Puss.....in Boots!)
hate to be a pain, but can someone please reply to this post? I'm trying to figure out if the reason I wasn't getting my LJ comment emails last night was because the new email address hadn't been validated yet (it has now), or if it's still going wonky.
ginger: (birthday)
Oh yeah :)

As of yesterday, happy 7th LJ-versary to me and [livejournal.com profile] joyce

Date created: 2000-05-03 07:02:22

and happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] deusinnomen.

Dear LJ: What's going on? This is the first time I can remember in over 6 years that half-a-dozen people haven't posted about Daylight Savings Time! :)
ginger: (method to the madness)
Anyone know of a way to see all posts you've made to a particular custom friends' group? I can find a half-dozen ways to see my f'list filtered by group, but I want to see my own entries grouped by the filter they were posted to - mostly because I have a whole lot of filters that repeat themselves and don't have very unique names. I'd kind of like to pare them down without rendering half my journal private, which is what happens if you just delete a filter...

Is this possible?
ginger: (method to the madness)
Dear LJ:

I want a drop-down menu on the web client for my tags, in addition to the text box. You do this for moods, so share the love.

Love, Ginger
